First day at work felt exactly like my first day at college. You can’t contain your excitement to enter the premises but once you enter you can’t wait to leave! I was late for my very first meeting. Apparently it was no big deal. In fact we were totally non existent to them. And yet, I was fervently taking down new, big fancy words I heard while they presented on ‘Trade Finance’.
Sitting at an empty desk, staring at your phone(which got us into trouble eventually), you start re-reading millions of year old messages, refreshing Facebook/Instagram every few seconds, at the same time trying hard not to listen to everyone else hammering away their keyboards while also looking super busy and important is pure talent. We exhaust the rest of our day taking long breaks and lunch.
Leaving for lunch initially at 12.30pm made people stare at us even more (We’re just hungry, no pressure).
Touring each floor, exploring the cafeteria were our breakout from endless hours of sitting idly. A week passed and we were finally given systems to stare at. Software was installed and mails were configured, but we were literally jobless.
You must wonder why would we be craving for ‘work’. Because we ran out of plans to kill time till 5.30pm. Fortunately, I signed up for the dance team to perform on the annual day so I got to escape the afternoons. Pros: Practice sessions were so much fun. Met a lot of interesting people. Con: I had to perform on stage.
On the big day, I was too nervous to talk and it was written all over my face. Trying to act cool only made it worse. The most awaited 10 minutes of the show was over in a blink of an eye. We did not win the trophy but we were sorta considered ‘People’s Champion’. We sure did feel satisfied with our effort. And so we shamelessly celebrated our trophy-less victory.
After 2 weeks of pure fun, hitting reality and focusing on work hit me like a truck. It was harder to stay put till 5.30pm. Office became boring more than ever. So I tried talking with my co-workers and they turned out to be cool people. Chocolates will be passed around when people return from onsite(That’s something to look forward to,isn’t it? Haha!). Playing Carrom and sleeping in bean bags became our office hobbies (Looks like I might even turn pro in carrom). So that’s how my first month passed by.
From the second month(August), we started off with small tasks; then assigned to projects and are kept busy. That moment when your code actually works – I’d stay on cloud nine.. forever. We still manage to play and try to have our own fun. On Mondays one simply anticipates for Fridays.
And just like every other normal, sane human being, I await for the last working day of the month (you know why 😉).
P.S. You’re lucky if you manage to enter and exit the ladies restroom at 8.30am without getting killed in there. The secret to how they manage to stay fresh all day will always be an unsolved mystery to me.
