All About Tamil Serials

“Well, since we are all confined within four walls, we might as well watch Vijay TV”

And that’s how it all started….

My lockdown vacay at Madurai got me introduced to Tamil Serials. Tamil Serials revolve around gossiping, plotting crazy schemes to take revenge, a lot of crying and a bucket load of makeup. But since we, Indians love gossips, Serials are a huge hit.

Serial time starts from 6pm goes on till 10:30pm (yeahhhhhh….) . My grandmother and I discuss alternate solutions to solve the protagonist’s plight; Curse the Antagonist and the family scheming against the innocent Heroine of the serial.

Sometimes I worry that these serials may give birth to evil ideas to families who watch the vengeful plots to sabotage their own kin. And the children watching along with the parents/grandparents might get the wrong message about our society.

The common characteristics I found, after watching 7 serials for 3 months are :

  1. The Protagonist or the Antagonist live in a huge extravagant house.

2. They have at least 3 siblings each to run the story.

3. All the actors will cry at some point in the story.

4. The female actors are never ugly when they cry. (0_o, tell me how)

5. The Hero/Heroine is most definitely deprived of one of the parents to create sympathy.

6. They are always dressed ready to go to wedding. The Dressing sense is weird. ( I mean, How do you manage to sleep with those layers of jewellery? )

7. Comedy is rare or negligent.

8. One single scene will/might drag on for a week.

9. Some serials have subtitles. (Good job :) )

10. The wives are tied to the house, with no personal space/ time to work on their dreams.

11. At least one wedding scene is most likely to happen.

12. You’re unlucky if you experience 30 minutes of conversations back and forth.(Been there, survived like a boss)

13. Warning: Romantic scenes make you blind. (And barf)

14. Never have high expectations for a fight scene.

15. The serial runs forever and ever. ( You never know, You might turn 50 along with the Hero of the serial)

I wouldn’t say I was addicted to it. I wanted to know what our Tamil people really like to watch and I’m a tad disappointed. And I no longer watch them.

I would love a tamil detective serial or a supernatural serial, but understandably it’s time consuming to write a script and go on shoots.

But I hope the World of Tamil Serial gets better.

On the other hand, I am a fan of K-Dramas :P

I’ll be sure to discuss about that too soon :P
